Tea Gift Set FAQs

Types Of Tea

Before purchasing any tea gift sets, here’s what you need to know about the most popular tea types.

Black Tea

black-tea

Derived from the Camellia sinensis plant, black tea is the most popular type of tea in the world. (78% of all tea produced and consumed around the globe is black tea.) It’s often blended with other plants to create flavors like chai, English breakfast, and Earl Grey.

Black tea leaves are oxidized during the production process to turn them from green to black. Black tea has a strong taste and the most caffeine of any tea, clocking in at about 47 mg of caffeine per 8-ounce cup. Decaf black tea has about 2 mg of caffeine per cup.

Green Tea

green-tea

This type of tea also comes from the Camellia sinensis plant, but it’s made from unoxidized leaves that are processed with steam heat or dry heat. Because green tea is less processed than other teas, it has higher levels of health-promoting polyphenols in it.

Green tea is second in popularity to black tea, accounting for 20% of all tea produced and consumed. How green tea tastes vary by how it was processed, but expect a sweet, nutty, buttery flavor from high-quality varieties. Green tea has slightly less caffeine than black tea, coming in at around 28 mg per 8-ounce serving.

Matcha is a popular form of green tea, made by grinding up young tea leaves into a powder. It has similar health benefits to green tea but has actually been shown to contain more EGCG. Matcha green tea has a slightly sweet taste and generally contains about 70 mg of caffeine per 8-ounce cup.

Herbal Tea

herbal-tea

Popular herbal teas include chamomile, ginger, hibiscus, peppermint, and rooibos. Herbal teas are made from dried flowers, leaves, herbs, or spices and don’t contain any caffeine. That makes them the perfect pick for a nighttime tea ritual as well as for anyone sensitive to caffeine. Herbal teas vary in taste depending on which kind you choose. Chamomile, for example, is sweet, while hibiscus is slightly tart and peppermint is cooling.

White Tea

This kind of tea is harvested from the buds of the Camellia sinensis plant before the leaves have opened. The buds are covered by fine white hairs, which is why this tea is called white tea. White tea has a very delicate flavor. Depending on the variety, you may taste floral, grassy, fruity, or sweet notes. White tea has around 28 mg of caffeine per 8-ounce cup.

Loose Leaf Tea vs Bagged Tea

loose-leaf-tea-tea-bags

Tea is sold in two different ways: loose leaf and bagged. Loose leaf tea typically has a stronger flavor. When you steep loose leaf tea using an infuser, the leaves absorb the water and expand, releasing aromas.

Tea bags, on the other hand, contain dust and fannings, which are smaller pieces of tea that have lost much of their essential oils. The tea bags themselves also prevent the tea leaves from releasing their full aroma. That said, bagged tea is a very convenient option and doesn’t require any special equipment to enjoy.

Tea Benefits

Tea has been popular for thousands of years, and for good reason as it has many proven health benefits.

  • Tea is full of polyphenols, compounds that promote health. Some of the most well-known polyphenols in tea include catechins and theaflavins. Studies show polyphenols have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that protect the body from disease.
  • Green tea, in particular, has high levels of catechins, the main one being Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). Due to its powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory nature, EGCG may be able to improve heart disease, diabetes, and high cholesterol. Studies also show that catechins in green tea may protect the brain against Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.
  • The National Cancer Institute states that the polyphenols found in green and black teas may help protect against cancer. Green and black teas also contain a compound called L-theanine, which decreases anxiety.
  • L-theanine also works with caffeine to improve brain function (think memory, mood, and reaction time). Caffeine, meanwhile, has been shown to improve physical performance.
  • Herbal teas have been linked to better sleep, improved digestion, and reduced high blood pressure.
